"Back to the Future"--Again

At the Senior High Conference at the Duncan Center in May 1987 the theme was "Back to the Future", and diocesan youth buried a time capsule, to be opened in the year 2000. On the afternoon of November 4, 2000, a small group--about 20, including spouses and children--of those time-travelers gathered at the Duncan Center to unearth this treasure chest of their past.

Some preliminary sleuthing by Fr. Doug Zimmerman (left) and Jim Klatt (right) of the Duncan Center staff determined where to dig. Fr. Doug asked for volunteer diggers.

Lloyd Bethel was first to respond.

Found! Lloyd gets some help from Adam Bardisa, whose parents were part of the
team that buried the time capsule 13 years ago, watched by Beth Jackson Smiley,
Maria Mena, David Huntsman, Fr. Doug and Laura Smith.

The successful excavation team: Lloyd Bethel and Kim Brown (kneeling) and (l-r) Beth Jackson Smiley, Chris Carver, Fr. Doug Zimmerman, David Huntsman, Laura Smith, Maria Mena, Stephanie and Debbie Silla.

Debbie, Laura and Chris watch in anticipation as Doug (with some help from several other sets of pounding and prying hands) tries to open the well-sealed box.

It was worth the effort. The contents of the time capsule--photos, posters, video and audio tapes, messages from the excavators' past selves--were well-preserved and ready for the new millennium.

Fr. Doug  and Alex Bardisa ponder a poster with photos, ads and headlines from 1987.

Debbie, Luis Rodriguez, Chris and Laura enjoy the photo album from their past.

The group decided there should be more reunions, and perhaps a chance to share what they've learned in the past 13 years with members of today's youth groups.
