Honoring Bishop Said

Deacons Doris Ingraham and Ledly Moss, with Mary Beth Wells and Vivian Hopkins behind them, wait to begin the procession--before the rain starts.

Retired Diocesan Bishop Calvin O. Schofield, Jr. and Bishop David Richards were concelebrants for the Eucharist.

Seminarians Terrence Taylor, Tom Bruttell and Christina Encinosa were among the 14 persons in the process toward ordination who joined the procession to celebrate with the bishop who has been their mentor and guide.

Processing with Bishops Ottley and Frade, Bishop Said pauses to greet his family.

Greg Said records the event while brother Jim and mother Ann sing the opening hymn and sister Deborah Alcoba listens.

Lectors included Caroline Brumbaugh, who worked closely with Bishop Said when she chaired the Commission on Ministry, and Foster Mack, a longtime lay leader at St. Kevin's, Opa-locka, where Bishop Said was rector before his election as bishop suffragan.

As is traditional at diocesan services, the Gospel was read in three languages, English, Spanish and French. Père Maud Paraison offers the reading in French.

Bishop Said's sons, Greg (left) and Jim, lead the Prayers of the People.

Bishop Leo Frade thanks Bishop Said and Ann for the "blessing" of their ministry--

and presents "not a check--an I.O.U." for the more than $28,000 given by parishioners throughout the diocese as a retirement gift. (Gifts are still being received, so a check for the total amount will be presented to the Saids on August 31.)

"It has been a privilege to serve as your bishop suffragan," Bishop Said tells the congregation.

Ann Said listens while her husband thanks the people of the diocese.

The choir of St. Matthew's, Delray Beach, sings at the offertory--

while the Mighty Band of God gets everyone clapping to favorite Cursillo songs at communion.

The end of a glorious celebration.
