World Mission Sunday--The Last Sunday After the Epiphany, Feb. 3, is designated by The Episcopal Church as "World Mission Sunday."  Each parish should have received materials from the Episcopal Church Center in New York regarding this year's theme, "Extending God’s Grace to Everyone/Everywhere."  Additional resources for Sunday's liturgy and more can be found at http://www.episcopalchurch.org/agr/wmsunday/. During this World Mission weekend each congregation in the diocese is asked to take a special collection to support the work of our missionaries, Bishop Todd and the Rev. Patsy McGregor, in our newest companion diocese, the Diocese of Antananarivo in Madagascar. The funds collected should be forwarded to the Diocese of Southeast Florida, designated for the McGregors’ Ministry. Click here for a bulletin insert flier with prayer requests from the Diocese of Antananarivo.

Parochial Reports—Parochial Reports should have been filed online with the Episcopal Church Center in New York by Jan. 31. Information is at http://www.diosef.org/LoginParochialRpt.php. The deadline for submitting the Key Personnel form, found at https://www.amerisurf.com/diosef/keypersonnel.html, is Feb. 15.

Reminder--update your parish website—Ash Wednesday is Feb. 6, so if you have not already updated your parish website with information on Lent, Holy Week and Easter worship and activities posted on or linked to the front page, NOW is the time! Your web presence is an important place for seekers to find your church. Another website hint: If you have recently moved to a new domain name, or plan to do so soon, it’s wise to pay the small amount of money to keep your old domain name and redirect users to the new URL for a year or two, perhaps with a message that the URL has changed. This helps to make sure that seekers will find your church site—instead of being directed to what one of our “techies” calls “anatomy lessons.”

Heritage Society Months—February and March have been designated by the diocesan Executive Board as Heritage Society Months, a time to heighten awareness in all congregations of one important aspect of stewardship--making provision for the disposal of our material possessions at the end of our earthly lives. Heritage Society chapters are made up of parishioners who have indicated that they are including the church in their estate plans. Episcopal Charities has sent each congregation in the diocese a CD with suggestions for a Heritage Society observance, as well as information on establishing a Heritage Society in a parish. For additional information on this aspect of stewardship, contact EC President Charlie Ring, 561-799-6424 or charlie@ecsefl.org.

Good Friday Offering—For the past 16 years the Good Friday offering of the Episcopal Church has gone to support the ministries of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East. Click here for an order form for materials for the Good Friday offering, or go to http://www.episcopalchurch.org/agr/friday for additional information and downloadable posters and bulletin shells.

Wardens and Treasurers Conference—The annual Wardens and Treasurers Conference will be held Feb. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.(no lunch provided) at Trinity Cathedral, Miami. This is an important opportunity for parish officers and clergy to receive essential information about vestry responsibilities, parish budgeting, sound financial practices, insurance and tools for church growth. It’s especially important for new parish leaders to attend, but because there are often new regulations and practices to explain, even seasoned parish officers are also urged to be there. There’s no charge for this event. Registration is available online at www.diosef.org/register.html. Click here for a complete agenda for the day.

ER-D Sunday—Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has declared Feb. 10, the First Sunday in Lent, as Episcopal Relief and Development Sunday, and has asked for special Lenten offering and prayer for the work of Episcopal Relief and Development. All gifts received will be designated for the Millennium Development Goals Inspiration Fund, which focuses on fighting deadly diseases like malaria and HIV/AIDS and providing basic health care that saves lives every day. For more information on the MDG Inspiration Fund, please see http://www.er-d.org/mdgif.

Clergy Retreat—The annual clergy retreat will be held Feb. 11-14 at Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center, 1300 US1 in North Palm Beach, beginning with registration Monday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. and concluding with lunch on Thursday, Feb. 14. The retreat leader will be the Rev. Canon Anthony Jemmott, rector of St. George’s Anglican Church in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. (For information on Canon Jemmott go to http://www.stgeorgesoshawa.org/.)  A contribution of $50 is requested from each participant; the balance of the cost is covered by the diocese. Clergy have received an email from Bishop Frade with additional information about the retreat, and registration is available online. Click here for an agenda.

Absalom Jones Services--The Rt. Rev. Nathan D. Baxter, bishop of Central Pennsylvania, will be the preacher for the 2008 diocesan Absalom Jones Service, scheduled for Feb. 16, at 10 a.m., at Historic St. Agnes, Miami. As is customary, the service will be followed by a luncheon. For additional information, contact Kathleen Walker at kathywalker001@gmail.com. For those in the northern part of the diocese who might not be able to travel to Miami for that service, an additional Absalom Jones Service will be held—also at 10 a.m. on Feb. 16—at St. Paul’s, Delray Beach. The preacher for that service will be Dr. Judy Fentress-Williams, assistant professor of Old Testament at Virginia Theological Seminary.

Bishop’s Spring Conference—Registration is now available online at www.diosef.org/register.html for the Bishop’s Spring Conference, Feb. 29-Mar. 1, 2008, at the Duncan Center. The Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, bishop of North Carolina, and his diocesan missioner for Congregational Development: Stewardship and Evangelism, William E. Wrenn, will be the facilitators, and the conference theme will be “Creating a Spirit of Generosity”. In break-out sessions there will be presentations tailored specifically for small, medium and large churches, as well as for Hispanic and Haitian congregations. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged. Click here for a complete agenda for the day.

Presiding Bishop’s visit--Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will be in our diocese April 15-17!  Planning is underway for two opportunities for people to worship and to talk with her: There will be a Eucharist and conversation at Bethesda-by-the-Sea, Palm Beach, at 6 p.m. on April 15, and a similar event at 6 p.m. the following evening at Trinity Cathedral, Miami. Bishop Katharine will meet with diocesan clergy at the Duncan Center during the day on April 16, and will visit various ministries in the Miami area on the morning of April 17. Watch for more details in next month’s Grapevine. Information will also be sent to clergy and congregations.

Youth Leader Training—Spirit Quest, a renewal and training workshop for those who minister with youth, will be offered April 11 and 12 at St. Martin’s, Pompano Beach. The workshop sessions will be Friday evening from 6:30 to 10 p.m., and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $40, which includes all workshop supplies, snacks on Friday night and Saturday morning and lunch on Saturday. For those who must travel too far to drive back on Friday night, overnight accommodations at a reduced rate are being arranged at a nearby hotel. Registration for the workshop will be available online. For additional information contact Krisan Lamberti, moonlightk@aol.com.

Acolyte Festival—The annual Diocesan Acolyte Festival will be held April 19, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at St. Martin’s, Pompano Beach. The cost is $12, which includes lunch. Every five youth participating should be accompanied by one adult. Each participating congregation is asked to name one acolyte to be recognized by the bishop at the festival for outstanding service at the altar. Names of acolytes to be honored must be sent to Mary Cobiella, diocesan coordinator for youth ministry, at mary@diosef.org, no later than Mar. 31. Registration for the Acolyte Festival will be available online at www.diosef.org/register.html.

ECW Annual Meeting--“Grow in Grace” will be the theme for the Annual Meeting of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW), to be hosted by the South Dade Deanery, April 25-26.  The site will be the Embassy Suites, 3974 NW South River Drive, near Miami International Airport. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Patsy McGregor, missionary in Madagascar. All women of the diocese are invited to attend, regardless of whether they are active ECW members. Registration packets will be mailed to all congregations in the diocese. For more information, contact ECW Second Vice President Marjorie Ward at 954-722-5870.

Gift cards for Louisiana—The Diocese of Louisiana is still collecting gift cards for families and individuals struggling to recover from Hurricane Katrina. Cards in any amount for such stores as WalMart, Walgreens, Home Depot or Lowe’s can be sent to: Anthony Johnson, Supervisor, Office of Disaster Response, Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, 1623 Seventh Street, New Orleans, LA 70115

Cursillo Sunday—The date for Cursillo Sunday, formerly observed in October, has been moved to the first Sunday in May. It’s not too soon for cursillistas to begin planning how they might use Sunday, May 4, to celebrate the Cursillo Movement in their parishes and encourage fellow parishioners who have not been part of Cursillo to experience a Cursillo weekend.

Minority Student Assistance—A diocesan committee has been formed to address the need to recruit more black and Hispanic persons in our diocese for the ordained ministry. If you are interested in participating in this work, either with raising funds to assist minority students with the cost of seminary education or with mentoring persons of color and/or of Hispanic/Latino background seeking ordination, contact the Rev. Dr. Ronald Fox, 305-945-1461 or stbernard@bellsouth.net.

VTS scholarship fund for black students--The Virginia Theological Seminary has announced the Bishop Payne Scholarship Fund, an award of full tuition for any full or part-time black student who is an Episcopalian from a province within the Episcopal Church USA and who is entering the Master in Divinity, Master in Theological Studies, Master of Arts in Christian Education, Anglican Studies or Full-time Special Student programs. To apply for the Bishop Payne Scholarship, contact the Office of Admissions at 703-461-1706.
