Deadlines are approaching for the Diocesan Convention, scheduled for Nov. 17-18 at St. Benedict’s, Plantation. The deadline for resolutions to be presented to Convention is Oct. 3. The deadline for nominations for positions to be filled by elections at Convention is Oct. 31. Nominations are needed for the following: one lay member and one clergy member of the Standing Committee; one clergy trustee of the University of the South; one lay member of the Ecclesiastical Trial Court; and one lay member of the Cathedral Chapter. PAC opening weekend at Trinity--Bishop Frade invites everyone to attend two events at Trinity Cathedral highlighting the opening of the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Oct. 6-8.  Friday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m., Evensong will be sung, followed by a "quarter peal" of the Cathedral bells by members of the Washington Ringing Society, based at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.  On Sunday, Oct. 8, Bishop Frade will celebrate at the 10 a.m. Eucharist, which will be the Miami premiere of the Missa Miamiensis, a Mass-setting for choir, soloists, organ, piano, field drum and saxophone. At the conclusion of the service, a "full peal" of bells will be rung, lasting approximately three hours. 

Clergy Appreciation Month--October is Clergy Appreciation Month. Although we appreciate our ordained leaders all year, this is a time for individuals and congregations to set aside for special recognition of clergy and their families for their faithful ministry among us. Safeguarding God's Children - A Safeguarding God's Children training will be offered at St. John's, Hollywood, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m.-noon. Call church office, 954-921-3721, for directions. The training starts promptly at 9:00--come earlier if you want coffee and breakfast treats. Required reports—Remember that parish audit reports for 2005, as required by Canon XX, Section 2, were due in the Diocesan Office by Sept. 1. Click here for an updated record of all required reports submitted by Sept. 27.

Revised Common Lectionary--General Convention 2006 approved a resolution making the Revised Common Lectionary the official lectionary of the Episcopal Church, effective Advent 2007 “with the provision for continued use of the previous Lectionary for purposes of orderly transition, with the permission of the ecclesiastical authority, until the First Sunday of Advent 2010”. Bishop Frade asks that rectors and priests-in-charge notify him, Bishop Ottley and the archdeacons before their visitations of which lectionary they intend to use on that Sunday. Church Publishing offers a printed Lectern Edition of the RCL texts for $56. This can be ordered online at http://www.churchpublishing.org. Webcast of investiture service—The Nov. 4 investiture service of Presiding Bishop Elect Katherine Jefferts Schori will be webcast. There will be a direct link on the Episcopal Church homepage,

(Eastern Time) and continuing through the liturgy's conclusion, expected around 1:15 p.m.

Journey to Adulthood training - Training for those who want to work with the J2A youth program will be offered Dec. 1 from 7-9 p.m. and Dec. 2 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at St. Stephen’s, Miami. This is not two separate trainings, but one course that starts Friday night and concludes on Saturday. There are no overnight accommodations. The cost is $25, which includes lunch on Saturday. Registration will be online.

Christmas Ball - Youth in grades 9-12 are invited to a diocesan Christmas Ball at chapel of St. Andrew, Boca Raton, on Dec. 16, beginning with dinner at 5 p.m. The cost is $10 per person with reservations or $15 at the door. The dress code is semi-formal. Invitations with complete details will be mailed soon to all rectors, youth ministers and youth leaders.

Bishop’s Spring Conference 2007—Save the dates for the Bishop’s Spring Conference—“The Magnetic Church”, presented by Andrew Weeks, Feb. 16-17, 2007, at the Duncan Center. This is a two-day conference, beginning on Friday afternoon; participants should plan to attend the entire event. Long-Term Care Insurance—Open enrollment will be Oct. 1-Nov. 30 for the Group Long-Term Care Insurance available for purchase through the Church Pension Fund. Watch for a mailing this month from the Pension Fund with information on this insurance and the eligibility requirements.

Anti-Racism Training--The Diocesan Anti-Racism Commission is again offering the Anti-Racism Training mandated by General Convention 2000 for all clergy, staff and lay leaders as a step toward ending institutional and other forms of racism. Two workshops have been scheduled: Nov. 11, 2006, at Trinity Cathedral, Miami, and Apr. 28, 2007, at St. Paul’s, Delray Beach. Both workshops are from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cost for the workshop is $10, which includes continental breakfast, lunch and all workshop materials. UNCSW delegates wanted--Women interested in participating in the Episcopal Church’s delegation to the 51st United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW), meeting Feb. 26 through Mar. 9, 2007, in New York City, are asked to apply by Nov. 15 to the office of Women’s Ministries.  Delegates experience the commission’s work through meetings at the UN and numerous parallel events and caucuses. Outstanding theological speakers coming to Miami—October and November offer several opportunities in the Miami area to hear well-known theological speakers. On Oct. 9 Dr. Kwok Pui Lan of Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., will speak at 10 a.m. at the Florida Center for Theological Studies, 111 NE 1 St., Miami. St. Mary Magdalene, Coral Springs, invite all the youth of the diocese to a Broward Deanery youth event Oct. 14 at the church. The Hispanic congregation at Trinity Cathedral, Miami, invites everyone to a weekend of celebration Oct. 20-22. On Friday evening, Oct. 20, from 6:30-9:30 p.m., there will be a concert by the choir from the Church of the Incarnation in Puerto Rico and the music ministry of Holy Cross, Miami. On Saturday evening, the choir and their rector, Fr. Trinity Cathedral, Miami, is looking for an interim organist to serve during the fall/winter of 2006, while the search process for a minister of music is underway. The interim organist will play at one Sunday service and accompany at a mid-week choir rehearsal under the direction of the choir conductor.
