JULY 2 0 0 7

Though it’s unlikely that anyone in our diocese hasn’t heard this news by now, for the record, here’s the announcement: On June 16 our Archdeacon Mary Gray-Reeves was elected to be the third bishop of the Diocese of El Camino Real in California! Click here for more on Archdeacon Mary’s background, the election and the Diocese of El Camino Real.

The consecration is scheduled for Nov. 10 at St. Andrew’s, Saratoga, Calif. Except for previously planned vacation time, Archdeacon Mary will be here through most of the summer, working with Bishop Frade to insure a smooth transition for clergy deployment and the process toward ordination in our diocese. Brenda Rasmus will continue as secretary for the diocesan deployment office.

He is scheduled to be in the Diocesan Office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; his extension is #17 and his email address is jfritzbazin@diosef.org. New Duncan Center Executive Director—Fr. Steve Fregeau retires July 31 as Executive Director of the Duncan Center. The new Executive Director is Alison Walsh, who has worked for 14 years in administrative positions (most recently, director of operations) at Canterbury Conference Center, the conference center of the Diocese of Central Florida. She will begin her work at the Duncan Center on July 23.

Hurricane readiness—We certainly should know the drill by now, but if you haven’t already completed your preparations for hurricane season, check the information at http://www.diosef.org/hurricane.html. Be sure the Diocesan Office has current contact information, not only for clergy, but also for the person designated as an emergency contact for the parish when the rector is on vacation. Miami-Dade County is reminding all faith-based organizations to make sure that their older members and those with special needs are prepared to be safe during a storm; churches are also asked to call 311 after a storm to report anyone who needs assistance from the county.

Draft Anglican Covenant—Documents relating to the Draft Anglican Covenant can be found by clicking on the “Draft Anglican Covenant” link on the front page at www.diosef.org. These documents include the Draft Covenant, a study guide (both of these available in English, Spanish and French) and a response to the Draft Covenant from our Executive Board and General Convention deputies.

Millennium Development Goals Sunday--July 8 has been designated Millennium Development Goals Sunday in the Episcopal Church, celebrating the mid-point of the UN's MDG goal to reduce extreme poverty in the world by 2015. The Diocese of Texas has developed materials to celebrate a special Millennium Development Goals Sunday, including a complete worship service with sermon and prayers of the people, bulletin inserts and background information. Curriculum for children and youth are also included with PowerPoint presentations of MDGs and another with an MDG atlas from the World Bank. These materials are available at: http://www.epicenter.org/images/edot/MDG/MDGContents.pdf. Additional information can be found at www.globalgood.org. Also, God's Mission in the World, a study guide on global poverty and the MDGs produced jointly between the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is available to purchase from Episcopal Books and Resources online at http://www.episcopalbookstore.org or by calling 800-903-5544.

Altar Guild Retreat--There will be a retreat for members of all altar guilds in the diocese on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Holy Family, Miami Gardens.  Led by Deacon Joanne Katon, the retreat will have the theme, “I come among you as one who serves,” and will focus on the meaning and holiness of the altar guild’s ministry. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and a continental breakfast will be provided. All who plan to attend should call Monica Allen at Holy Family, 305-652-6797.

Happening Training Workshop—All youth who have attended Happening are invited to a Happening Training Workshop on Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at St. Mark the Evangelist, Ft. Lauderdale. Participants will learn more about Happening, and will have the opportunity to become part of the leadership for Happening in our diocese. The team for Happening #23, scheduled for Oct. 5-7, will be selected from those who attend this workshop. For further information and to register contact Mary Cobiella, mary@diosef.org or 800-268-9993 ext. 29, or Fr. Hallock Martin at Holy Spirit, West Palm Beach, holyspiritec@bellsouth.net or 561-833-7605.

Diocesan Youth Convention—The 2007 Diocesan Youth Convention will be held Sept. 14-15 at the Duncan Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m. (dinner not provided) on Friday and ending with dinner on Saturday. Registration is online at www.diosef.org/register.html. Each parish is encouraged to send two delegates (Senior High), two alternates (Junior High) and one observer. There must be one adult chaperone for every five youth from a parish. At the conference the youth will elect the cabinet members (officers) of the Youth Commission (President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Administrative Assistant). Those who are interested in becoming cabinet members should send name, email address, phone number and the position for which they wish to be nominated to Mary Cobiella at mary@diosef.org. A workshop has been scheduled for Aug. 12 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church, Coconut Grove, for those interested in serving as cabinet members; lunch will be provided.

Seafarers’ House Interfaith Luncheon--The Annual Seafarers’ House Interfaith Luncheon will take place Aug. 18 aboard Royal Caribbean International’s “Enchantment of the Seas” which will be docked in Port Everglades Terminal 25. Fall Clergy Conference—The annual Fall Clergy Conference will be held Sept 11-13 at the Duncan Center, beginning Tuesday evening and ending after lunch on Thursday. The conference leader will be the Rev. Dr. James Lemler, director of Mission for The Episcopal Church. As administrator for the mission program groups, Dr. Lemler travels throughout the church as a teacher, preacher and conference leader. He has also written extensively on mission, leadership, stewardship, spirituality and congregational life and development. Registration will be online at www.diosef.org/register.html.

Diocesan School—The new email address for the Diocesan School for Christian Studies is dioschool@aol.com. Information for the fall semester, which begins Sept. 15, will soon be posted on the Diocesan School page at diosef.org.

McGregors’ visit—Our missionaries, Bishop Todd McGregor and his wife, the Rev. Patsy McGregor, have told us that they will be in Florida this summer and fall. Both will be here Aug. 9-19, and Sept. 12-30. Todd will leave Oct. 1, and Patsy intends to stay through Nov. 10. If you wish to contact them about visiting your parish while they’re here, you can reach Todd at revmctodd@yahoo.com or Patsy at ackstjulians@swiftkenya.com .

“Let’s Eat Shrimp for Mississippi”—The Hurricane Katrina relief agency, LESM (Lutheran Episcopal Services in Mississippi) is inviting communities from around the church to participate in its second annual “Let’s Eat Shrimp for Mississippi” fundraising effort. On Saturday, Sept. 1, LESM is hosting its own shrimp-fest fundraiser, and is urging groups around the country to hold satellite “LESM”events (with or without Gulf shrimp on the menu) on or around that time. For information contact Lutheran Episcopal Services of Mississippi, PO Box 23815, Jackson, MS  39225, 601-352-7125, www.lesm.org.

Methodist-Episcopal Study Guide--General Convention 2006 approved a relationship of Interim Sharing of the Eucharist between the United Methodist Church and the Episcopal Church. “Make Us One in Christ”, a study guide for facilitating this relationship, will be sent to all parishes, and can be found online at http://episcopalchurch.org/documents/MUOCFINAL.pdf. As part of this ongoing relationship, the speaker for our Diocesan convention in November will be Bishop Timothy Whitaker of the Florida Council of the United Methodist Church.

The Sacred Art of Spiritual Direction--A course in spiritual direction will begin with a training session Sept. 13-15 at the Duncan Center. “The Sacred Art of Spiritual Direction: A Ministry Training Program” will include three subsequent two-and-a-half-day sessions. The course is designed to prepare those who feel called to the ministry of spiritual direction to “listen with an ear tuned to the movement of God in another person’s life.” For more information or to register call 561-496-4130.

Resolutions and nominations for Diocesan Convention—If you are planning to submit resolutions or nominations for the Diocesan Convention, Nov. 2-3, remember that resolution must be submitted by Sept. 18 and nominations by Oct. 19.

Nominees needed for elections at GC 2009--The Joint Standing Nominating Committee of General Convention is seeking applications from persons willing to be nominated for five elections that will take place at General Convention 2009, to be held in Anaheim, California, June 12-18. New members will be elected to: the Court for the Trial of a Bishop, Trustees of the Church Pension Fund, the Executive Council, Trustees of the General Theological Seminary, and the General Board of Examining Chaplains. The Committee welcomes nominees broadly representative of the constituency of this church, and has a mandate to increase diversity. The Committee encourages early submissions. Applications are due by February 1, 2008.  Application forms and information about these positions can be found at http://andromeda.rutgers.edu/~lcrew/nomcomGC2009/

Holy Land Pilgrimage--Bishop Frade is planning another pilgrimage to the Holy Land; the trip is scheduled for Jan. 15-29, 2008. The pilgrimage will include visits to Jerusalem, Nazareth, Cana, Capernaum, Mt. Nebo, Jericho and other significant biblical sites, as well as a day in Jordan and a day in the historic city of Petra. The cost is $3,845 per person, double occupancy (additional $595 for single accommodations); included in the cost is a $200 tax-deductible donation to Our Little Roses Ministries. Click here for complete details.

Resource for learning Spanish Mass—Recorded versions of the Rite Two (Rito Dos) Mass in Spanish are available as downloadable MP3 files at http://www.madreanna.org/massrecording/index.htm. There are two recordings--one at normal speed and the other recorded at a slower speed for listening and learning.

Images for your use--Four Episcopal artists, commissioned by the Office of Communication's web department, have each created a set of 12 Christian symbols that have been placed on the church's website for use at no charge for non-commercial purposes. The symbols lend themselves readily to use on banners, posters, bulletin covers, postcard mailers, newsletters, study guides, Christian education curriculum materials, parish-produced devotionals, and church websites. The graphics are available in both medium and high resolutions. For images:    http://www.episcopalchurch.org/symbols/
