          Parishioners and friends from throughout the diocese are invited to an Eucharist service, with a reception following, in honor of Archdeacon Mary Gray-Reeves on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. at All Saints', 333 Tarpon Dr., Ft. Lauderdale. This will be an opportunity for everyone to congratulate Archdeacon Mary and to say goodbye to her before she leaves for El Camino Real. Choir members from other congregations who wish to join with All Saints' musicians to provide music for the service should call All Saints, 954-467-6496.

          Her consecration as bishop is scheduled for Nov. 10 at St. Andrew's, Saratoga, Calif. Archdeacon Mary plans to be here through most of this month, completing her work with Bishop Frade to insure a smooth transition for clergy deployment and the process toward ordination in our diocese. She will need to be in her new diocese after Labor Day. Brenda Rasmus continues as secretary for the diocesan deployment office.

Diocesan School—Fall semester classes at the Diocesan School for Christian Studies begin Sept. 15. A revised catalog for the school, including links to registration forms for both the school course offerings and Eucharistic Visitor training, is posted at www.diosef.org/dscs. The registration forms can also be found separately at www.diosef.org/register.html. The deadline to register for fall semester courses is Sept. 27. The cost per course at the Diocesan School is $100. Scholarship assistance is available; the deadline for scholarship requests is Sept. 4 for the fall semester and Jan. 2, 2008, for the spring semester. Hurricane readiness—We certainly should know the drill by now, but if you haven't already completed your preparations for hurricane season, check the information at http://www.diosef.org/hurricane.html. Be sure the Diocesan Office has current contact information, not only for clergy, but also for the person designated as an emergency contact for the parish when the rector is on vacation. Miami-Dade County is reminding all faith-based organizations to make sure that their older members and those with special needs are prepared to be safe during a storm; churches are also asked to call 311 after a storm to report anyone who needs assistance from the county.

Wal-Mart cards for Katrina Disaster Relief--The Office of Disaster Response of the Diocese of Louisiana is requesting donations of Wal-Mart gift cards for its Katrina Disaster Relief program. The cards are used to supplement regular disaster assistance.     The cards most needed are for $25. Altar Guild Retreat--There will be a retreat for members of all altar guilds in the diocese on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Holy Family, Miami Gardens.  Led by Deacon Joanne Katon, the retreat will have the theme, “I come among you as one who serves,” and will focus on the meaning and holiness of the altar guild's ministry. Happening Training Workshop—All youth who have attended Happening are invited to a Happening Training Workshop on Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at St. Mark the Evangelist, Ft. Lauderdale. Diocesan Youth Convention—The 2007 Diocesan Youth Convention will be held Sept. 14-15 at the Duncan Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m. (dinner not provided) on Friday and ending with dinner on Saturday. Registration is online at www.diosef.org/register.html. Each parish is encouraged to send two delegates (Senior High), two alternates (Junior High) and one observer. There must be one adult chaperone for every five youth from a parish. At the conference the youth will elect the cabinet members (officers) of the Youth Commission (President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Administrative Assistant). Those who are interested in becoming cabinet members should send name, email address, phone number and the position for which they wish to be nominated to Mary Cobiella at mary@diosef.org. A workshop has been scheduled for Aug. 12 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church, Coconut Grove, for those interested in serving as cabinet members; lunch will be provided.

McGregors' visit—Our missionaries, Bishop Todd McGregor and his wife, the Rev. Patsy McGregor, are in Florida this month and will be here, as well as in other parts of the country, into the fall. Todd's schedule during their visit is nearly full, and he will leave Oct. 1, but Patsy will stay through Nov. 10.  She plans to be at our Diocesan Convention, Nov. 2-3, and may still have open dates on her calendar during October. Resolutions and nominations for Diocesan Convention—If you are planning to submit resolutions or nominations for the Diocesan Convention, Nov. 2-3, remember that resolution must be submitted by Sept. 18 and nominations by Oct. 19. 

Seafarers' House Interfaith Luncheon--The Annual Seafarers' House Interfaith Luncheon will take place Aug. 18 aboard Royal Caribbean International's “Enchantment of the Seas” which will be docked in Port Everglades Terminal 25. The event will begin with registration and embarkation at 11:15 a.m., followed by a cocktail reception at 12:15 p.m. and luncheon at 1:30 p.m. Disembarkation is at 2:30 pm. Open seating is $40 per person. All proceeds from this event will benefit the ministry of Seafarers' House at Port Everglades. This event is open to only 200 guests. Registration—and information about sponsorships--is at ; click on special events.

Sea Sunday Observance—Bishop Frade is scheduled to be one of the participants in an interfaith prayer service sponsored by Seafarers' House on Aug. 26 at 3 p.m. at Berth XX at Port Everglades. Sea Sunday is a day set aside annually by those involved in maritime ministry to pray for seafarers and to draw the attention of the community and the world to those who work at sea. Fall Clergy Conference—The annual Fall Clergy Conference will be held Sept 11-13 at the Duncan Center, beginning Tuesday evening and ending after lunch on Thursday. The conference leader will be the Rev. Dr. James Lemler, director of Mission for The Episcopal Church. As administrator for the mission program groups, Dr. Lemler travels throughout the church as a teacher, preacher and conference leader. He has also written extensively on mission, leadership, stewardship, spirituality and congregational life and development. Registration will be online at www.diosef.org/register.html.

Hispanic Heritage Month celebration--The diocesan Hispanic Commission has announced an all-day celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month Saturday, Oct. 13, at St. James in-the-Hills, Hollywood. Events are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., including praise music by an Hispanic Christian band and a combined choir from the Hispanic congregations of the diocese, a service in thanksgiving for the uniqueness and diversity of the Hispanic cultures represented in our diocese, dinner with traditional Latin foods and dancing to Latin music. All events are open to the public and are free.

Holy Land Pilgrimage--Bishop Frade is planning another pilgrimage to the Holy Land; the trip is scheduled for Jan. 15-29, 2008. The pilgrimage will include visits to Jerusalem, Nazareth, Cana, Capernaum, Mt. Nebo, Jericho and other significant biblical sites, as well as a day in Jordan and a day in the historic city of Petra. The cost is $3,845 per person, double occupancy (additional $595 for single accommodations); included in the cost is a $200 tax-deductible donation to Our Little Roses Ministries. Pastoral Crisis Intervention workshop--On Oct. 2 and 3 the Duncan Center will offer a workshop on Pastoral Crisis Intervention presented by the Rev. Dr. Robert E. Steinke, a Lutheran pastor who is affiliated with the Department of Homeland Security and the Frederick County (Md.) Emergency Management Policy Group and was one of the first responders ministering to those in trauma and crisis on 9/11. The workshop sessions will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Oct. 2, with lunch provided, and 9 a.m.-noon on Oct.3. The fees are: $45 for both sessions with lunch; $35 for one day with lunch; and $20 for the half-day with no lunch. Revised Common Lectionary materials--Church Publishing Incorporated (CPI), official publisher of the worship materials of the Episcopal Church, is introducing a complete line of Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) resources, including lectionary books, gospel books, music and electronic resources. The 2006 General Convention authorized a transition to the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) for Sunday use beginning the first Sunday of Advent (Dec. 2) 2007. Volunteer tutors are needed--for Project L.E.A.D. (Literacy for Every Adult in Dade), the Miami-Dade Public Library System's adult literacy program, which is designed to reach out to English speaking adults who are functionally illiterate (i.e. reading below the fifth grade level) and offer them free, one-on-one, confidential tutoring to improve their reading and writing skills. “Let's Eat Shrimp for Mississippi”—The Hurricane Katrina relief agency, LESM (Lutheran Episcopal Services in Mississippi) is inviting communities from around the church to participate in its second annual “Let's Eat Shrimp for Mississippi” fundraising effort. On Saturday, Sept. 1, LESM is hosting its own shrimp-fest fundraiser, and is urging groups around the country to hold satellite “LESM”events (with or without Gulf shrimp on the menu) on or around that time. Methodist-Episcopal Study Guide--General Convention 2006 approved a relationship of Interim Sharing of the Eucharist between the United Methodist Church and the Episcopal Church. “Make Us One in Christ”, a study guide for facilitating this relationship, will be sent to all parishes, and can be found online at http://episcopalchurch.org/documents/MUOCFINAL.pdf. As part of this ongoing relationship, the speaker for our Diocesan convention in November will be Bishop Timothy Whitaker of the Florida Council of the United Methodist Church.

St. Mary Magdalene, Coral Springs, will celebrate Jamaican Independence Day with a special Eucharist at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4. The guest preacher will be the Very Rev. Winston Wright, rector of Grace Church, West Palm Beach, and dean of the North Palm Beach Deanery.

St. James the Fisherman, Islamorada, will hold its Vacation Bible School for children ages 2-13 Aug. 6-10 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  The theme is Avalanche Ranch:  A wild ride through God's Word.  There is a $20 registration fee. Contact Michelle at 305-852-8468 for additional information.

St. Nicholas, Pompano Beach, will observe the Feast of St. Mary the Virgin with a special service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15. For information call 954-942-5763.

St. David's-in-the-Pines, Wellington, will offer a U2charist on Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. The service will feature the music of the Irish rock band U2, performed by St. David's Praise Band, and prayer led by St. David's youth group. The theme of the service is social justice, calling all participants to do their part to bring about the reign of God. All donations collected at the service in Wellington will be sent to the international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) called PlayPumps International.  PlayPumps is a nonprofit organization that enables individuals, governments, foundations, and companies to donate PlayPump™ water systems to rural African communities and schools. 

On Sunday, Aug. 19 at 5 p.m., St. Andrew's, Lake Worth, will present its annual Chocolate & Wine Extravaganza, featuring chocolates from Mexico, Java, the Caribbean and Africa, with wines and foods that enhance them. Tickets are $25 per person and may be purchased by calling the church office, 561-582-6609. Tickets must be reserved in advance. All proceeds will benefit St. Andrew's ministries.

St. Martin’s, Pompano Beach, is offering a “Fear of Airline Flying A-Z” course on Aug. 29 and Sept. 5 and 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Topics range from airplane construction to security concerns and passenger rights.
