Tropical Storm Fay has left most of us, as a newspaper in the Keys put it, blessedly “un-Fay-zed,” but now there’s Hurricane Gustav, as well as a string of other “disturbances” stretched across the Atlantic-- be sure your emergency preparations are in place!

After any storm affects our area, remember that the Diocesan Office needs to know if there’s damage to any church property or if anyone in your parish or community needs assistance.

Resources for hurricane preparedness and response are available at http://www.diosef.org/hurricane.html.

Episcopal Relief and Development is accepting donations to assist those affected by Fay; go to http://www.er-d.org/TropicalStormFay/. Donations for storm recovery can also be made on our diocesan website at https://www.amerisurf.com/diosef/online_donation.html

The theme is “Revisiting the Baptismal Covenant,” and the facilitator will be the Rev. Dr. Katherine Sonderegger, professor of theology at Virginia Theological Seminary. Full attendance will earn 8 CEUs. Registration is available online at www.diosef.org/register.html.

Diocesan Convention—Materials for deanery Fall Convocations this month and for the Diocesan Convention, Nov. 7-8, have been mailed to delegates and clergy. The convention packet includes information on hotel reservations, the island-themed dinner on Friday evening at Palmer Trinity School and the three optional Friday morning workshops. Online registration for the convention, the dinner, childcare (during convention sessions and the Eucharist) and the workshops is now available at www.diosef.org/register.html. To reserve exhibit space, contact Rebecca Parker, rparker@stepsmia.org or 305-661-3437. Note these pre-convention deadlines: Resolutions must be submitted to the secretary of Convention by Sept. 25; and nominations and biographies of nominees must be received by the secretary of Convention by Oct. 23 (nominations after this date must be made from the floor). Positions that must be filled by elections at convention this year are: two clergy members and one lay member of the Standing Committee; one clergy member of the Ecclesiastical Trial Court; one lay trustee of the University of the South; and one lay member of the Cathedral Chapter.

For more information contact Fr. Orlando Addison, 954-987-2203, or froaddison@bellsouth.net.

Sea Sunday—Bishop Frade is scheduled to be among the clergy participating in the annual Sea Sunday observance sponsored by Seafarers’ House on Sept. 14, at 3 p.m., at terminal 29 at Port Everglades. This interfaith service honors all those who serve at sea. Watch for details at http://www.seafarershouse.org/

Safeguarding God’s Children--A Safeguarding God's Children training session will be offered at St. Mark's, Palm Beach Gardens, on Saturday, Sept. 20, 9 a.m.-noon, in the parish hall.  Please RSVP to the church office, 561-622-0956 or to pastorlisa@stmarkspbg.org.

Nehemiah Overnight Retreat—All diocesan clergy and parish lay leaders are invited to the Nehemiah Overnight Retreat at the Duncan Center, Sept. 23-24, beginning with lunch on Tuesday and ending at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The keynote speaker will be Bill Wrenn, Missioner for Stewardship and Evangelism of the Diocese of North Carolina, who was one of our speakers at this year’s Bishop’s Spring Conference. The cost is $94 for double occupancy, $130 for single occupancy and $55 for commuter. Registration is online at www.diosef.org/html.

National Acolyte Festival--This year’s Annual National Acolyte Festival, which usually draws participants from several of our congregations, will be at Washington National Cathedral on Saturday, October 11. Watch for details and registration information later in the summer at http://www.cathedral.org/cathedral/worship/acolyte.shtml.

Episcopal Futbol/Soccer Tournament—The First Annual Episcopal Futbol/Soccer tournament for youth, “The Bishop Frade Cup,” will be held Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a location still to be announced, probably somewhere in Miami. For information, call or email Fr. Orlando Addison at St. James-in-the-Hills, Hollywood, 954-987-2203 or froaddison@bellsouth.net, or you may register your team now by emailing Fr. Addison with the list of players.

Prison ministry--Deacon George Kinard, who is now our diocesan coordinator for prison ministry, is available—and eager—to speak to congregations and groups about what our diocese is doing (and hopes to do) in ministries to those who are incarcerated and their families, and to help ex-offenders return to a healthy, productive life in the community. You can contact George at 772-546-1027 or gojud3@bellsouth.net.

Day of Repentance for Slavery--A two-day solemn observance will be held Oct. 3-4 at the historic African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at which the Episcopal Church will publicly apologize for its involvement in the institution of transatlantic slavery. The gathering will begin on Oct. 3 with presentations focused on past, present and future, along with displays of archival material. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will serve as celebrant and preacher at the service of repentance on October 4 at 10:30 a.m. For more information about this event, go to http://www.episcopalchurch.org/79901_99818_ENG_HTM.htm, or contact Fr. Chip Stokes, chipper141@aol.com, or Dr. Gay Outler, gayoutler@bellsouth.net.

Resort Ministry Conference--Some of you may already have received information on a conference called “Vital Ministry in Resort Areas: Gospel Proclamation in a Hyper-Consumer Vacation-Mindset Society,” to be held Oct. 21-23 at Keystone Lodge in Summit County, Colorado. If you are interested in this conference, which would probably be relevant to many congregations in our diocese, go to www.resortministry.org for details.

Tax information for churches--The Internal Revenue Service has issued a revised version of its publication, Tax Guide for Churches and Religious Organizations. The 28-page multi-colored publication provides guidance on obtaining and keeping tax exempt status, employment taxes, unrelated business income taxes, employee business expenses, record keeping and filing requirements. The IRS says that this is meant to be a quick reference to the current state of tax law and procedures as they relate to churches and religious organizations.

Net mailing list-- If you haven’t updated your parish mailing list for The Net in the past year, please do that—out-dated addresses cost us about $2000 in “bad address” returns from the post office last year! Address updates go to US Data, data@usdps.com, or 12601 SW 130 St., Miami, FL  33186. If you have a question about format, call US Data at 305-256-0293.

Facebook—Are you on Facebook? Thanks to the Rev. Christina Encinosa, the diocese now has a page on the social networking site, providing us with another way to communicate with each other around the diocese. If you use Facebook, you can join us at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=16618644484. (Also look for pages for The Episcopal Church, Trinity Cathedral, Friends of Episcopal Charities, Washington National Cathedral and other Episcopal groups.)

Next year’s BSC—Mark your calendars now for the next Bishop’s Spring Conference, Mar. 13-14, 2009. Our speaker will be Diana Butler Bass, scholar and author of six books, including the best-selling Christianity for the Rest of Us.

January 2009 Pilgrimages—In January of 2009 Bishop Frade and Diana will lead two pilgrimages: a 15-day trip to Egypt and Rome, departing Jan. 2, and a 10-day Holy Land pilgrimage, departing Jan. 27. Click here for complete information on the Egypt/Rome trip and here for the Holy Land pilgrimage. Space is very limited for both trips, and reservations will be honored on a first-come first-served basis. A $300 per person tax-deductible donation to Our Little Roses Ministries is included in the cost of the tickets for each trip.
