COPE 2000 Annual Parish Lay Staff Conference

The name COPE has always been a half-joking acronym for "Coalition (or conference) of Parish Executives", but the theme of this year's COPE Conference, held at the Duncan Center Nov. 7 and 8, gave those initials new meaning: "Communication, Opportunity, Peace of Mind and Excellence for the Parish Administrator".  Worship, conversation and fun were complemented by workshops on such topics as parish tracking and accounting systems, "calm computing", new types of office equipment, personal safety in the workplace, interpersonal relationships, "stress-busters" and the Florida Episcopal Dioceses Credit Union. There were opportunities to shop at Trinity Cathedral Bookstore's traveling display (as well as the Duncan Center's own shop)--and even a time for song and dance!

(Photos take a minute to load.)

Willow Morzella (Holy Trinity, West Palm Beach), Carol Stillman, (St. Joseph's, Boynton Beach), Marcela Belgrave (St. Christopher's, West Palm Beach), COPE co-chairs Nancy Besserer (St. Christopher's) and Missy McArdle-Snapp (Holy Trinity), and Bob Daugherty (All Saints', Ft. Lauderdale) enjoy introductions of the rest of the group before dinner on Tuesday night.

Bishop Frade arrived for dinner, and made sure he met everyone there. Here he stops to talk with Paulette Doubek (left) of St. Andrew's, Lake Worth, and Dorothy Hilborn (right) of St. Nicholas, Pompano Beach.

"I have met with the clergy," the bishop told the group, "and now I want to meet with the people who do the real work."

("What a wise bishop you are!" Missy remarked.)

After Evening Prayer, Bishop Frade asked for a photograph with the people he called "key" to making the diocese more interconnected.

With the bishop on the front row are (l-r) Missy McArdle-Snapp, Sharon Padgett, Dorothy Hilborn, Janet Aguhob; second row (seated, l-r) Mary
Rose Sheriff, Paulette Doubek, Debbie Marinello, Valerie Graham, Nancy Besserer; third row (standing) Wendy Williams, the Rev. Jeannie Martz (COPE chaplain), BobDaugherty, Thelma Dawes, Carolyn Brown, Jean O'Brien, Marcela Belgrave, CharVinik, Carol Stillman, Willow Morzella.

."That box under your desk is not the computer--this is the computer," explains Jim Margolis, beginning with basics in the "Calm Computing" workshop.

Thelma Dawes (All Angels, Miami Springs) and Debbie Marinello and Sharon Padgett of Holy Sacrament, Pembroke Pines, listen eagerly as Dr. Susan Stuber (right) gives "stress-busting" tips.

Julie Winchester (right), financial secretary at Holy Trinity, West Palm Beach, reviews slides on parish tracking and accounting software for (l-r) Leslie Ross and Dottie Seligman of St. Gregory's, Boca Raton, and Candy Grudovich of St. Luke's, Port Salerno.

Kathy Vezin of Max Davis & Associates demonstrates new printing and copying equipment for Jean O'Brien (COPE's "lifetime member", retired after 27 years as the rector's secretary at Bethesda-by-the-Sea, Palm Beach), and Cary Rosillo, also from Bethesda.

Carol Stillman and Thelma Dawes collect information from each other in a frenetic game that demonstrated varying personal styles of communication.

"Game's over." Deborah Bennett tries to get the attention of the group for the next part of her presentation on different communication styles.

"Go with your gut reaction" to protect you in situations that might be risky, Palm Beach County Deputy Sheriff Kelly Whittles told the group.

Jean O'Brien provided a "joy" break, leading the singing of songs like "This is the day that the Lord hath made", "I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart" and "Joy to the World".

There was more joy--and considerable energy--as the group participated in "Gospel Aerobics", a lively routine set to gospel music--

a work-out for body and soul.

Smiley centerpieces made by co-chair Nancy Besserer went home with someone from each table--but everyone went home with smiles.

All parish lay staff members are part of COPE; if you would like to be active in a parish lay staff network throughout the diocese and in palnning for next year's COPE Conference, contact Missy McArdle-Snapp at Holy Trinity, htec@flinet.com, or Mary Cox at the Diocesan Office, mwcox@dosef.org
