Canon Francisco de Arazoza, diocesan administrator and assistant to interim Bishop Miguel Tamayo of Iglesia Episcopal de Cuba, and Bishop Leo Frade were among the speakers in support of a resolution on U.S. policy toward Cuba at a legislative hearing this morning.

“The embargo is an issue that is preventing relationships between the church in the U.S. and the church in Cuba…it is very important to the church in Cuba that the Episcopal Church pronounces itself against this embargo, ” Canon Arozoza said.

Bishop Frade said, “I am against Castro, but I also stand here as an American, and I have difficulty, because our country is committing murder…”

He explained that the U.S. economic embargo against Cuba has caused people to die because necessary medical equipment and supplies could not be imported.

“Our country is causing suffering in Cuba,” Frade said, “and we have got to stop this!”

Youth

Today the youth from Southeast Florida who are participating in E3, the youth event being held in conjunction with General Convention, arrived at the Convention Center.

SE Florida participants in E3 are: Angela Boone (St. Matthew’s, Delray Beach), Vivian Sterling (St. Philip’s, Pompano Beach), Douglas Dozier (Christ Church, Miami), Christopher Hendricks (All Saints’, Jensen Beach), Christopher “Kit” Allen-Faiella (St. Stephen’s, Miami), Ian Headley (St. Matthew’s, Delray Beach) and Tarica Labossiere (St. Matthew’s, Delray Beach). Fr. Terrence Taylor, rector of St. Christopher’s, West Palm Beach, and former diocesan Canon for Youth Ministry, and Gladys Rodriguez of Todos los Santos, Miami, are adult advisors to the group, as is Erin Ferguson, who is also an alternate from our diocese.

At General Convention 2003, Erin Ferguson (left) of St. George’s, Riviera Beach, was a member of the Offical Youth Presence. This time he is one of our alternates, and is also an adult counselor, along with Gladys Rodriguez (right) for E3.

Most Honored Woman

This afternoon the ECW Triennial the Most Honored Woman—a woman whose ministry and example are outstanding--from each diocese.

Our ECW chose Monica Allen of Holy Family, Miami Gardens. Monica is active in ECW, Daughters of the King, Cursillo and Kairos Prison Ministry. She leads a Bible study group and a prayer group in her parish and works with feeding programs for the homeless—all while working fulltime in the Miami-Dade County school system in the Department of Career Preparation.

She was not originally scheduled to be a delegate to Triennial, but when one of the diocesan delegates found she was unable to attend, Monica was asked to fill in.

“It’s a learning experience,” she says.

Little children

The three-month-old daughter of the Rev. Augusta Anderson, a deputy from the Diocese of Western North Carolina, is probably the youngest person on the floor of the House of Deputies.

Members of Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation gather outside the House of Deputies, snapping their fingers every three seconds to remind deputies that every three seconds a child dies from poverty-related causes somewhere in the developing world. Millennium Development Goal #4 is to reduce child mortality.
