Barry, Silva Installed as Canons
at Absalom Jones Service

Two black leaders of the Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida, Fr. Richard L. Marquess-Barry and Mrs. Verneka Silva, were installed as honorary canons of Trinity Cathedral at the diocesan Absalom Jones Service, Saturday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m., at the cathedral. Bishop Leo Frade was celebrant and preacher for the service, and Bishop Suffragan John Said and retired Bishop Calvin O. Schofield assisted.

Fr. Barry, a native Miamian, has been rector of Historic St. Agnes Church, Miami, since 1977, and has been recognized by the city of Miami, as well as by other churches, for his work in Miami’s Overtown community. In 1972, when he was vicar of St. Simon the Cyrenian in Ft. Pierce, Fla., he led a class action suit to integrate the schools in St. Lucie County, and has been active in human rights efforts throughout his ministry. He has served as a delegate to General Convention, dean of the North Dade Deanery and as a member of the diocesan budget committee. Last year he was one of the six candidates for diocesan bishop.

Fr. Barry is already a canon of St. Peter’s African Orthodox Cathedral in Miami, honored by that church in 1995 for his life and ministry.

Mrs. Silva, also a native of Miami, retired as assistant principal at Coral Gables Senior High after 40 years in the Miami-Dade Public Schools. In her parish, Christ Church, Miami, she has had many roles—parish secretary, Senior Warden and Lay Eucharistic Minister, among others. She has served on the diocesan Executive Board, Standing Committee and Commission on Ministry, and is the current diocesan president of the Episcopal Church Women.  She works with many community groups addressing the needs of women and young people, and continues to be a leader in such organizations as the Union of Black Episcopalians and the United Negro College Fund.

Mrs. Silva is the second layperson—and the first woman—to be named a canon in this diocese. (Diocesan Chancellor Emeritus Fred Stanton was installed as a canon in 1996.)

Following the service, the Theodore R. Gibson chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians held a luncheon at the Miami Women’s Club, featuring music by the St. Cecilia Choir from Church of the Incarnation, Miami, and a fashion show of African-inspired clothing, modeled by members of Canon Barry’s parish, St. Agnes.
